Live Concert with Streaming Audio: Concréte Mixer IV at Walnut Room Denver, Friday Jan 30th, 9pm

I am excited to be returning for my fourth Concréte Mixer show. At this event, I will use an Octatrack dynamic sampler to incorporate real-time audio output from other musicians at the event to create expressive "instruments" on-the-fly. I will also perform a solo piece manipulating field recordings with infrared AudioCube controllers. To accompany the music and sound for the show, I will also be providing interactive visuals with live camera input.

The Walnut Room in Denver has been a loyal supporter of experimental and ambient artists, and is a beautiful venue with superior sound and the best audio engineers in town. On January 30, five artists from different realms of performance and composition will convene at the Walnut Room to present an evening of acoustic, analog electronic and digital noises, sound effects and tonal music inspired by the musique concréte form and philosophy. Mark Mosher will create expressive sample-based “instruments” on-the-fly, building up his instruments in real-time by sampling his own synthesizers as well as capturing audio from contact mics, and output from the other artists. To compliment the music and sound, Mark will also project interactive visuals. He will be joined by electronic musicians Rod Tanaka and Mike Metlay, theremin artist Victoria Lundy, Concréte Mixer curator Thomas Lundy, and sound designer and musician Rick Reid all performing solo and interactive work.

 

Victoria Lundy has been playing theremin in the Denver experimental/underground/punk scene since the 90s. She was a member of the avant garde Carbon Dioxide Orchestra, who opened for the legendary Silver Apples in 1997; is a founding member of Denver’s acclaimed nerd rock band The Inactivists and has appeared all of their 6 CDs and EP, and as a guest player live and in recordings with other local artists. She also was a member of Jackson Induced Mutant Laboratory and performed with them at the 2011 Denver Noise Festival and at the 2013 Denver Post Underground Music Showcase with ambient project Pythian Whispers. Victoria has appeared at many venues in Denver as well as Boulder’s Dairy Center for the Performing Arts, and demonstrated the theremin at the World Science Fiction Convention. Mark Mosher is a synthesist, recording artist, and performer from Boulder. He has performed at festivals and theaters around the country such as Electro-Music NY, Electro-Music & Mountain Oasis Festivals in Asheville NC, and the Art Institute of Sunnyvale CA. Locally he has produced shows and performed at the Dairy Center for the Arts, DU and CU. In 2015, Mark broke into the top 5 in the US and top 15 Global ReverbNation charts for the Electronica genre. Rick Reid has been fascinated with recorded sound ever since early childhood, when he heard his own voice played back on his older brother’s reel-to-reel tape deck. His first electronic instrument was a photo theremin, built with a Radio Shack electronics kit. Rick now owns and plays a wide range of electronic and acoustic instruments ranging from the conventional to the truly peculiar. Rick studied radio and TV broadcasting in both high school and college and worked part-time as a radio personality while still in school. He has since created thousands of TV on-air promos, marketing videos and commercials as a writer/producer for Starz, Encore, MoviePlex, TNN and broadcast TV stations in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. As a freelance voice actor, he has also been heard on dozens of national and regional radio and TV commercials, web videos and corporate/industrial media productions. Rick has been a sound designer for more than sixty theater production in the Denver-Boulder area, and has occasionally performed as a stage actor. He has released two experimental electronic music albums and created underscore and theme music for the sci-fi web video series “Lucha Libre: El Tecolote vs. the Body Thief from Dimension X.” He is slated to play theremin on the score of an upcoming indie horror feature film. Rod Tanaka Having been bitten by the electronic music bug the the late 70’s, I purchased my Minimoog synth and have not stopped creating sounds and music. Years and many synths/gadgets later I find myself still creating new sounds and ways to perform. I have been in a few different Rush Tribute band projects for nearly 30 years and it is there where I have learned to push technology envelope the most and have had to be the most creative and original in finding solutions to pull off complex material in a live setting. Working and teaching at Guitar Center for 15+ years now, I have enjoyed getting hands on experience with all of the evolution that has come about in music technology. I have also worked for Apple as a trainer and developer and have delivered almost 3000 hours of personal one-on-one training helping people foster their creativity with technology. I have also been a Music Photojournalist for over 30 years and have gotten to interview and photograph many of the top artists of our time, from those experiences I’m able to have my pulse on whats happening in the music world. I currently privately teach songwriting, recording, music technology and am available for hire as a Drummer, Guitarist, Bassist, Keyboard/Synth Programmer.

Thomas Lundy has served as curator of the Concréte Mixer series since its beginning. He will provide metal shrieks for Mark Mosher.

Dr. Mike Metlay is an experimental music veteran with a career spanning over three decades, from modular synthesizers and tape splicing to modern software-based virtual instruments. Having left his career as a nuclear physicist to become the Editor of RECORDING Magazine (www.recordingmag.com), “Dr. Mike” has maintained a steady music output, racking up a large discography on labels like Aural Films, Earth Mantra, JustNotNormal, and his own now-retired Atomic City imprint.
He is best known as an organizer of collaborative music projects; in his own words, “I do not collect synthesizers—I collect synthesists.” He used the infant Internet to organize the Team Metlay studio sessions of 1990 to 1999, and founded and ran Arizona’s annual Different Skies electronic music gatherings from 2003 to 2012. Today, he curates mindSpiral, an ongoing series of music projects with a revolving roster, and the Eklektik Elektrik Kolektiv (EEK!), spontaneous music “flash festivals” where anything can happen. He participates in many music festivals, including City Skies and Mountain Skies, outgrowths of Different Skies in Atlanta and Asheville.
In addition to his studio and live work, Dr. Mike has a weekly radio show on stillstream.fm and a virtual alter ego, Mr. Spiral Sands, an avatar who plays electronic music in the online virtual world of Second Life. These virtual performances are often combined with live concerts and broadcasts over the Internet. Dr. Mike and Mr. Spiral have worked together for seven years now, and no longer argue over who gets top billing. Much.

For his first Concréte Mixer, Dr. Mike plans to update the found-sound experiments of his youth, combining non-electronic sound sources and microphone arrays with digital signal processing gear.
