Wireless Controllerism on Windows 10 with Microsoft’s Xbox One Wireless “S” Bluetooth Game Controller

If you’ve been following along, you know I’ve been experimenting with the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 as a musical instrument platform for Live, Max for Live and virtual modular. I’ve also been working towards a completely wireless battery operated setup for a rapid setup rig for live improvisational work including wireless expressive controllers. Another advantage of wireless means you can use the same system on the couch without accidently snapping off a cable or stressing a port.

Controllerism with a Game Controller

I’ve been using wired joysticks on-and-off for a year or so. One interesting thing about using an Xbox (or PlayStation controller) as an expressive controller is that the design affordances are as well understood and obvious as the pedals of a car.

This means:

Moldover is on tour and made a stop in Denver to perform a show and give a workshop at The Church nightclub in Denver last night. A big thanks to Marc Wei of Ableton Colorado for behind-the-scenes work to pull this workshop together in Denver.

Moldover’s workshop offered a nice blend of topics including controllerism, controller building,  real-time effect processing on vocals, Ableton, workflow, creativity, personal productivity, song writing, and touring.  I highly recommend you attend one if you get the chance. Checkout his tour page for a calendar.

Throughout the workshop he performed some songs using a custom Guitar (Robocaster) with buttons, joystick, and accelerometers; the MOJO customer controller; and a new prototype of a vocal controller called the MOJITO that is clamped to the mic stand.

Here is a close-up shot of the MOJO which has buttons, knobs, switches, sliders and touch strips.

It  is built around the notion of 4 tracks of real-time controllerism and playback control (inspired by 4 track tape deck work). Each type of controller is assigned a specific type of role. For example touch strips control tonal modulations.

There were lots of behind-the-scene looks at his Ableton sets. DSCN5072

During and after the workshop Moldover took the time to answer questions.

It was so great to meet Moldover in person after all these year. He was a huge inspiration for my controllerism work, rig, and the 9 Box Casual instrument.

Electro-Music 2012 Festival Is Almost Here

The fantastic lineup for Electro-Music 2012 Festival has been announced. This wonderful event is held at the Greenkill Retreat Center in Huguenot, New York so if you live nearby I recommend you check it out. If you’ve never been, read my show report from my first trip here.

If you can’t make the event, make sure you mark your calendar and tune into the live stream a http://radio.electro-music.com.

More info and tickets at http://event.electro-music.com/.

See You At the Festival

I’m excited to announce I’ll be returning to Electro-Music 2012 Festival in NY for the third year running. Here is a blurb for my events that will appear in the program.

Friday Sept. 7, 10:30 PM – Expressive Visual Controllerism Concert
In his third year at Electro-Music, Mark will continue to explore the boundaries of controllerism with Ableton Live coaxing even more expressive real-time performances out of his various virtual synthesizers. It’s all about original sci-fi techno songs and experimental improvs filled with classic and signature synth ear candy performed on keys, grids (Launchpad/Tenori-On), Theremin, AudioCubes, and Lemur.  Visual feedback FTW!

Saturday Sept. 8, 4:00-5:00pm – Creating and Controlling Signature Sounds
with Camel Audio Alchemy
Alchemy offers a great blend of performance features combined with deep synthesis, sample manipulation, resynthesis, granular synthesis, and built-in FX. There is also a mobile app that can act as a wireless multi-touch controller for Alchemy on your computer.  The goal of this talk is to shorten your learning curve so you can start creating your own expressive signature sounds for production and performance. Topics will include: Anatomy and signal flow, programming walk-throughs, tips on incorporating field recordings into patches, overview of modulation mapping, overview of FX, and performance mapping.

9 Box AudioCube Casual Music Instrument Turns 1

image

One year ago I announced the 9 Box on Modulate This. The long name for the system is “9 Box is a Method for performance, improvisation, and spontaneous tribal jams with music, sound, and light”. In short, the 9 Box is a casual music instrument based a method and set of template patches for Percussa AudioCubes and Ableton Live.

Below is a photo of the system featuring one of my cats sitting in “Player 4” position. The FX Audio Cube is detecting his position and translating this to “Bit Crushing” strength. As you can see the the system can easily fit in a backpack as it’s basically a computer, a powered hub and 6 AudioCubes (minimum of three cubes is required).DSC02822

Highlights From the Last Year

Videos

Here are a few videos showing the system in action.

Video from a jam at Electro-Music 2011

The system is also being used as the basis for music and science labs in schools. Here is a video the system at the STEM Magnet Lab School at Metro Denver. The Lab is mentioned at 8:13. It’s so exciting for me to see the 9 Box being used to inspire students – especially k-6! Watch embedded video.

Plans for the Next Year

  • AudioCube workshop and jam featuring the 9 Box at the Mountain-Skies festival in Asheville, NC
  • More videos showing the system used as a DJ system and for coordinated performances
  • More videos on how to setup, play, and refill the system
  • More refills
  • More templates with more FX options for sensor cubes
  • More schools, more jams, more music and sound…
